?We?re going to take a look at what happened [in Newtown] and what can be done to help avoid it in the future, but gun control is not going to be something that I would support.? ? Representative Robert W. Goodlatte, Republican from Virginia and incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

Investors in the gun industry include one group that now stands out conspicuously: public school teachers, via their pension funds.

New report on state teacher-pension policy by the National Council on Teacher Quality finds the structure of teacher pensions in the United States untenable: These systems are not only costly to states, districts, and taxpayers, but retirement benefits are being squeezed and distributed unfairly. The report assesses teacher-pension systems in 50 states and the District of Columbia, detailing the pension-policy landscape, and finds pension systems to be underfunded by $390 billion. Most retirement eligibility rules are burdensome, unfair, and allow teachers to retire relatively young with full benefits. The report recommends that every state offer teachers a flexible and portable defined-contribution pension plan. Formulas for determining benefits should preserve incentives for teachers to continue working until conventional retirement ages. States should ensure that teachers vest no later than the third year of employment; have the option of a lump-sum rollover to a personal retirement account upon termination of employment that includes teacher contributions and accrued interest at a fair rate; have options for withdrawal from either defined-benefit or defined-contribution plans that include funds contributed by the employer; and purchase time for previous teaching experience and leaves of absence.

New research finds that measuring principal effectiveness using student test scores is more difficult than anticipated. The new research from Stanford University proposes and examines three broad approaches in using test scores to evaluate principals, adjusting, in each case, for the background characteristics of students that might affect academic performance: tying principal performance directly to school performance (?school effectiveness?); comparing different principals? performance at the same school (?relative within-school effectiveness?); or examining growth in student achievement over a principal?s tenure (?school improvement?). In the end, researchers found none of these methods to be satisfactory. The study cautions that it?s important to think about what various measures can and cannot reveal about the specific contribution of a principal, and to recognize that none of these are a clear indicator of principals? specific contributions to student test-score growth.

Policymakers must emphasize prevention over remediation. Prevention strategies should be conceived more broadly ? for example, giving every student access to a content- and vocabulary-rich curriculum in the early years, or implementing programs and strategies that improve student attendance and academic behaviors. Efforts to close academic preparation gaps should begin as early as possible, be more intensive, and take as long as necessary. Based on the study?s results, policymakers should not assume that rapid catching up is possible if only educators try harder.

A new guide from the American Institutes of Research is designed for state and district leaders, who play a key role in ensuring that ELLs graduate from high school well-prepared for college and careers. The guide summarizes the ELL-relevant information in 34 approved state applications for ESEA waivers, and focuses on implementation of reforms related to ELLs across three principles in waiver requirements: 1) college- and career-ready expectations for all students; 2) differentiated recognition, accountability, and support systems; and 3) effective instruction and leadership. The guide includes requirements for each principle related to ELLs in the flexibility waivers; descriptions of how the plans addressed ELLs; considerations for research-based enhancements to current policy and practice; and examples of state and district innovations for ELLs related to waiver provisions. The gaps in achievement between ELLs and their English-proficient peers continue to be a problem. As growth of the ELL population continues to outpace the growth of the PK?12 population, and ELLs continue to score poorly across content areas, it will be important for states to fully consider ELLs when implementing reform plans.

NASA prepares twin spacecraft for crash landing

Ebb and Flow, two spacecraft that have been investigating the moon's gravitational field, will end their existence by smashing into the moon's north pole next week. The event is not likely to be visible from Earth, but the?Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter?may catch a glimpse. ? ?

Just don't expect to see celestial fireworks. Next week's impact near the moon's north pole by the washing machine-sized spacecraft won't carve a gaping crater or kick up a lot of debris. And it'll be dark when it happens.

"We are not expecting a big flash or a big explosion" that will be visible from Earth, said mission chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Still, it'll mark a violent end to a successful mission that has produced the most high-resolution gravity maps of Earth's closest neighbor. On Friday, engineers will turn off the science instruments in preparation for Monday's finale.

Previous unmanned trips to the moon have studied its lumpy gravitational field, but Ebb and Flow are the first ones dedicated to this goal. Since entering orbit over New Year's weekend, the formation-flying spacecraft have peered past the craggy surface into the interior.

Initially, the spacecraft flew about 35 miles (56 kilometers) above the surface and later dropped down to 14 miles (22 kilometers). About an hour before Monday's impact, they will fire their engines until they run out of fuel and slam at 3,800 mph (6,115 kph) into a predetermined target ? a mountain near the north pole that's far away from the Apollo landing sites.

Ebb will hit first followed by Flow 20 seconds later. Though the drama won't be visible from Earth, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will fly over the crash site afterward and attempt to spot them.

The last time?NASA?aimed at the moon was in 2009. The world watched through telescopes and over the Internet as a spacecraft and its booster rocket smashed into a permanently shadowed crater ? a one-two punch that fizzled when spectators saw little more than a fuzzy white flash.

The mission's end will also mark the close of a student campaign that used cameras aboard the spacecraft to image lunar targets including on the moon's far side. The MoonKAM project was spearheaded by a science education company founded by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. Ride died of pancreatic cancer in July at age 61.

Even after Ebb and Flow complete their mission, scientists will continue to pore over the bounty of data they collected.

Among their findings so far: The moon is more beat up than previously imagined. The crust is much thinner than thought. And there's no evidence that Earth once had two moons that collided to form the one we see in the night sky.

SSRS 2012: Excel invalid file on ipad/safari/....

An excel report from reporting services with Sql Server 2012 is unable to open on ipad (in safari) and or any office application availlable for ipad.

When we open and save the file in excel all the programs on ipad have no problem in opening them.

After looking at the differences in the xlsx-xml files between the file generated by reporting server and the excel file from Excel the following differences are the cause:
- in [Content_Types].xml an override element to workbook.xml is missing
- the contentType for xml extensions should be: application/xml

Additional Excel saves it's path's relative while SSRS uses an absolute path's.

Why not render the files the same as Excel?

UN suspends polio drive in Pakistan after killings

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? The United Nations suspended its polio vaccination drive in Pakistan on Wednesday after eight people involved in the effort were shot dead in the past two days, a U.N. official said.

The suspension was a grave blow to the drive to bring an end to the scourge of polio in Pakistan, one of only three countries where the crippling disease still survives.

On Wednesday, gunmen shot at a woman working on the campaign in northwest Pakistan, killing her and her driver, one of five attacks during the day on polio workers. A male polio immunization worker was critically wounded in one of the shootings.

This week six other people have been killed who were working on the immunization program, which has been jointly conducted with the Pakistani government. No one has claimed responsibility, but some Islamic extremists charge that the program is a cover for espionage.

At the U.N., Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the killing as "cruel, senseless and inexcusable." He said the eight workers were among thousands across Pakistan "working selflessly to achieve the historic goal of polio eradication."

Sarah Crowe, spokeswoman for UNICEF, said the vaccination program has been suspended everywhere in Pakistan until an investigation by the Pakistani government is completed.

"This is undoubtedly a tragic setback, but the campaign to eradicate polio will and must continue," she said.

Some provincial governments in Pakistan continued to immunize children, independent of the U.N. drive.

Prevention efforts have managed to reduce the number of cases in Pakistan by around 70 percent this year compared to 2011, but the recent violence threatens to reverse that progress.

Suspicion for the attacks has fallen on the Pakistani Taliban because of their virulent opposition to the polio campaign, but the group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, denied responsibility in a telephone call to The Associated Press. Police say they have killed two militant suspects and arrested a dozen others in connection to the attacks but did not say whether they were Taliban.

Militants accuse health workers of acting as spies for the U.S. and claim the vaccine makes children sterile. Taliban commanders in the troubled northwest tribal region have also said vaccinations can't go forward until the U.S. stops drone strikes in the country.

Insurgent opposition to the campaign grew last year after it was revealed that a Pakistani doctor ran a fake vaccination program to help the CIA track down and kill al-Qaida founder Osama bin Laden, who was hiding in the town of Abbottabad in the country's northwest.

The number of attacks this week on polio workers is unprecedented. They came as the government started a three-day vaccination drive Monday targeting high risk areas of the country, part of an effort to immunize millions of children under the age of five.

The deadliest of Wednesday's attacks occurred in the northwestern town of Charsadda, where the female polio worker and her driver were gunned down, said senior government official Syed Zafar Ali Shah. Gunmen attacked two other polio immunization teams in Charsadda and one in the town of Nowshera, but no one was hurt in those attacks, he said.

Earlier in the day, gunmen shot a polio worker in the head in the city of Peshawar, wounding him critically, said Janbaz Afridi, a senior health official in surrounding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

On Tuesday, gunmen killed five female polio workers ? three of them teenagers ? in a series of attacks in Karachi, the capital of southern Sindh province, and a village outside Peshawar. Two men who were working alongside the women were critically wounded in those attacks. A male polio worker was also shot to death in Karachi on Monday.

Police conducted two operations in Karachi in the wake of the shootings in which they arrested a dozen suspects and killed two suspected militants, said senior police official Shahid Hayat.

Several dozen polio immunization workers and human rights activists protested against the killings in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, on Wednesday and demanded security for the field staff.

The Pakistani government also condemned the attacks, saying they deprive Pakistan's most vulnerable populations ? specifically children ? of basic life-saving health interventions. The U.N. said it was increasing security for its polio workers, but did not provide any details.

Polio usually infects children living in unsanitary conditions, attacks the nerves and can kill or paralyze. A total of 56 polio cases have been reported in Pakistan during 2012, down from 190 the previous year, according to the U.N. Most of the new cases in Pakistan are in the northwest, where the presence of militants makes it difficult to reach children.

The new campaign aimed to give oral polio prevention drops to 34 million children under the age of five. Clerics and tribal elders were recruited to support polio vaccinations in an attempt to open up areas previously inaccessible to health workers.

Connecticut Schools on Lockdown Due to 'Suspicious Person'

In the aftermath of Friday's Newtown school shooting, we've heard tales mostly horrifying and occasionally heroic, from surviving witnesses and mourning citizens alike, but this one lies somewhere in between, all the more unshakeable. One six-year-old Sandy Hook student played dead in her first-grade classroom, her family pastor said late Sunday, with the kind of quick thinking that ended up saving her life but now leaves her with the unshakeable memories of watching all her classmates being shot and killed. ...

In churches and stadiums, Americans mourn shooting victims

Jessica Rinaldi / Reuters

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wears a decal on his helmet Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, in tribute to the victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Updated at 8:26 p.m. ET: Americans came together in the thousands Sunday to honor the memories of the 26 victims of the shootings at a Connecticut High School.

This Sunday was Gaudete Sunday, the Advent observance of joy and celebration, but in churches and cathedrals across the country, the message was one of reassurance and comfort for the distressed and the afflicted.

Hundreds of people signed a book of condolences and prayed special prayers Sunday morning at Our Lady of the Cross Parish in Holyoke, Mass.

"I lost a little child once, just a matter of days old, and that's still with me although it's 50 years later," Paula Brunault of Holyoke told NBC station WWLP of Springfield, Mass.

"I just know that prayers surround the people, really and truly. It's the best thing we can do for them," she said.

The Rev. Scott Kubinski, pastor of Christ the Redeemer Parish in the Elmira, N.Y., area, denied that the shootings were the will of God. Instead, he told parishioners at St. Casimir's Catholic Church, it was the fruit of the free will that God allows people to have, NBC station WETM of Elmira reported.

Full coverage: Tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary

"God isn't happy about it, but God is with us through it all, giving us strength," he said. "That's why people do turn to faith in times of sadness and why they turn to prayer."

More than 150 chaplains of the Law Enforcement Chaplaincy of Sacramento, Calif., dressed in full police uniform Sunday and visited churches, restaurants and shopping malls to offer hope.

At Bayside Church, an Evangelical Covenant megachurch in Roseville, Calif., Senior Chaplain Mindi Russell told thousands of families who packed inside to pray for the victims and families of Friday's massacre.

Russell said it was understandable that children were asking why the shooting happened and why so many people were killed.?

As families hugged one another and prayed for the violence to end, Russell reassured the congregation that while there are bad people in the world, there are many more good people, NBC station KCRA of Sacramento reported.

NFL teams also honored the shooting victims, lowering flags to half-staff ?and observing a moment of silence before all of Sunday's games. Some teams brought young children onto the field, and players ? many of them visibly moved ? stood hand in hand with them.

The New England Patriots ? whose owner, Robert Kraft, also owns a box company that has a factory less than a mile from Sandy Hook Elementary School ? were wearing black-ribbon logos on their helmets for Sunday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers.?

The Patriots also planned to fire 26 white flares ? one for each of the victims ? at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

The New York Giants wore decals bearing the letters SHES ? standing for Sandy Hook Elementary School ? on their helmets Sunday for their game in Atlanta against the Falcons. Coach Tom Coughlin told NFL.com that his team had been "very, very much affected" by the shootings.

The New York Jets were to wear the same decal Monday night for their game against the Tennessee Titans.

(Vegan) Holiday Eggnog Smoothie ? Low Fat Vegan Chef Recipes

by Low Fat Vegan Chef Veronica on December 16, 2012

When I was a kid I used to love eggnog. I have no idea why, but I would go crazy for it at Christmas and couldn?t help myself. Now I can?t even imagine drinking that stuff because it?s just so thick and rich and obviously not vegan. ?Last year I tried some vegan eggnog from the health food store, but it was also very thick and rich. My tastes have definitely changed and it just wasn?t my thing!

So this year I decided to make a healthier version, using ripe bananas. If your bananas are really ripe and spotted it will make the perfect drink. Please do not use green/yellow bananas as they are too starchy and not sweet enough or ripe enough to be used in smoothies. The bananas I used for this recipe looked like the one on the right, lots of dark brown speckles.

First I peeled and froze some bananas the night before, and then I left a few ripe ones on the counter to use in smoothies as well.

I find frozen bananas are excellent for adding an ice-creamy like texture to blended drinks, so I highly recommend trying it! They make this eggnog smoothie so delicious I?ve been making them all weekend! It takes a boring old banana smoothie to the next level!

To make this creamy you?ll need some non dairy milk as well too. I used almond milk. To make this a completely raw recipe, you can make your own raw almond milk from my recipe here.

Either way I think you will have a new favorite holiday breakfast or snack recipe! Feel free to impress your family or guests with this one too!

vegan eggnog smoothie shake

Serves 1-2

Ingredients:

1 cup almond milk, or other non dairy milk (unsweetened)
1/8 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
2 ripe bananas, frozen (and broken into pieces if using a regular blender
1 fresh ripe banana
1/4-1/2 tsp ceylon cinnamon (true cinnamon)
dash or two of ?ground nutmeg
dash or two of ground cloves

Directions:

 1. Place ingredients into blender or Vitamix and combine until smooth and creamy. If using a regular blender you may want to let the bananas defrost for a few minutes before blending to make it easier on the blender. Cutting them into smaller pieces helps too.
 2. Garnish with additional cinnamon or nutmeg if desired.
 3. Serve immediately

Additional Tips:

If you don?t have plain cloves or nutmeg you can use a little pumpkin pie spice instead.

What?s your favorite holiday beverage??

How To Reduce 401K Fees Through Portfolio Analysis | Financial ...

Do you know how much in mutual fund fees you are paying a year? I didn?t, so I ran my 401K portfolio through Personal Capital?s 401k fee analyzer and I?m absolutely shocked by the results! I always figured that from a percentage point of view, my mutual fund fees were small. But, when you take a small percentage multiplied by a big enough number, the absolute dollar amount starts adding up!

401K Fees Add Up!

As you can see in the picture above, I?ve got four main mutual funds in my 401K account after jumping back into the market post election. I?ve got another fund worth about $22,000 as part of my 401K which does not show a fee, probably because it is a hedge fund whose fees are baked into the performance. Typical hedge fund fees are 2% of assets under management and 20% of upside. This is called 2 and 20, which is egregiously high, but it?s the only way I can get short exposure to hedge my bets.

I?ve been wanting to do a 401K/mutual fund fee analysis for the longest time, but was too lazy to do the analysis until I realized I didn?t have to do the calculations myself. As the new year arrives, I want my portfolio to be as optimized as possible.

ANALYZING YOUR 401K FOR EXCESSIVE FEES

* Huge spread in expense ratios. The cheapest expense ratio is 0.19% for the Vanguard IT Index Fund and a whopping 0.74% for the Fidelity Blue Chip Growth Fund. 0.74% is almost 4X greater than 0.19%, supposedly because they?ve got to pay the fund manager and analysts for providing alpha and outperforming the S&P 500 index. If the fund manager(s) can indeed outperform the S&P 500 index by more than 0.5% a year, then their fee is on par with my cheapest Vanguard Index Fund. If not, I?m wasting my money.

* Fees add up over time. In 20 years, I will have paid ~$87,000 in mutual fund fees if I keep my existing portfolio. I don?t know about you, but that seems a lot, even if my 401k does grow to $1,500,000 as my 401K savings guide estimates. Just doing the math here, 67% or $58,290 of the $87,000 in fees will come from my Fidelity Growth Fund alone. Meanwhile, the Fidelity growth fund only accounts for 39.5% of total assets. Long term growth has a way of compounding into great returns for consistent investors and savers, however it sure does a number on the total amount of fees as well.

* Understanding tax cost ratio.?The Tax Cost Ratio measures how much a fund?s annualized return is reduced by the taxes investors pay on distributions. The range is usually between 0%-5%, the lower the better.?For example, if a fund had a 1.5% tax cost ratio for the three-year time period, it means that on average each year, investors in that fund lost 1.5% of their assets to taxes e.g. a 10% return is really only a 8.5% return. It?s good to see my highest fund with a 0.74% expense ratio have only a 0.11% tax cost ratio! One can simply combine the two to figure out their total expenses. The Fidelity Growth Fund is therefore 0.85% vs. 1.94% for the Vanguard Precious Metals fund! The Vanguard IT Fund is the lowest 0.31%.

* Big fan of index funds. The Vanguard family of funds have some of the lowest, if not the lowest fees in the mutual fund industry. The reason is because of their scale and also because they run passive index funds. There?s no team of analysts to pay. There are no business trips to expense to go kick the tires of the company?s they hold. The index is rebalanced usually once a quarter, or whenever there is a big index addition or subtraction to reduce variance risk. Three out of four of my funds are by Vanguard. After I finish typing this post, all of my funds will be by Vanguard!

* You can create a portfolio of index speciality funds. About 60% of my entire 401K allocation is invested in three speciality index funds: Energy, Metals & Mining, and Technology. If I wanted, I could create a portfolio of 20 speciality index funds if I wanted to. In other words, you don?t have to buy one fund that asset allocates across the industrial board. If you have conviction in particular industries which you think will outperform, there is an index fund for you. We can discuss investment decisions in a future post.

401K PRO FORMA ANALYSIS OF LOST RETIREMENT OVER TIME

This is the chart that really kind of makes me sick. Let?s say I continue to max out my 401K like I have been doing for the past 13 years, get a full employer match (I was getting more due to profit sharing), and assume an annualized return of 5.8%. After 30 years, I will have paid $489,014 in fees and lost out on 2 years worth of retirement income!

The funny thing is, my blended expense ratio is 0.43% compared to Personal Capital?s target benchmark of 0.5%! The public is paying a tremendous amount of mutual fund fees over our lifetimes, and we don?t really know it until we do the analysis. To put it differently, if you want to make big bucks in your life, you should consider a career in money management. It?s all about leverage. A fund manager can run $1 billion dollars under management as easily as he can run $10 billion dollars under management.

401K Lost Performance

CONCLUSION

It?s important to not only look at the expense ratio, but also the tax cost ratio to see how much your performance is getting reduced by each year. Look to invest in lower cost index funds instead of actively managed funds who have shown a poor track record of performance. There are plenty of studies showing that the large majority of actively managed funds underperform their benchmarks.

Personal Capital helped me realize that I am paying at least $1,000 more a year in mutual fund fees than I should by investing in the Fidelity growth fund. I wouldn?t have been able to see what an outlier the fee is without the 401K fee analyzer that aggregates all the data and provides a side by side comparison. Not bad for a free online financial management huh??I suggest everybody take a hard look at their finances to see where they are paying unnecessary fees.

Readers, when was the last time you checked your 401K fees? How have you found Personal Capital?s tools so far?

Step by step: If you want to figure out how much in fees you are paying in your 401K for free, sign up with Personal Capital, click the ?+? button on the top left to add/link an account. For my Fidelity hosted 401K, I typed in the search box ?401k.com? since the Fidelity pre-populated button just linked to my Fidelity rollover IRA. After your 401K account is linked, click the ?Investing? tab on the top right, then choose ?Investment Checkup? and then select the ?Cost? link.

To bring up the second chart in the post, click the ?401K Fee Analyzer? link under the Investment tab and play around with the assumptions. It?s best to use three assumptions: conservative, base case, and blue sky to have a feeling of where your 401K will be when you want to retire. I have a feeling you are going to be as surprised as I was about how much you are paying in fees. After writing this post, I?m exchanging my Fidelity Fund into a Vanguard Large Cap fund.

Regards,

Sam

Oregon approves tax deal for Nike expansion

SALEM, Ore. (AP) ? A deal proposed by Nike Inc. to create hundreds of jobs in Oregon in exchange for a guarantee that the state won't change a favorable corporate tax structure prompted state lawmakers to approve emergency legislation Friday.

Critics have questioned the timing and purpose of the special session, but rather than head out on holiday vacations, the state's part-time legislators met in Salem on four days' notice to consider whether to give the world's largest athletic shoe and apparel company the assurances it demanded.

The deal is evidence of the lengths Oregon leaders will go to in order to protect the state's best-known company, and the economic footprint, with its trademark swoosh, that it has in the state.

"We have a wonderful, wonderful company that's going to be remaining in Oregon because of what we're doing here today," said Democratic Sen. Ginny Burdick of Portland.

Gov. John Kitzhaber's decision to call the special session stunned lawmakers who didn't see it coming, underscoring that even as tax incentives have become a common tool for politicians to lure large employers, Nike's deal is unconventional.

The meeting cost taxpayers $13,000 and came less than two months before the regular legislative session was set to convene. It is aimed at maintaining the status quo, rather than approving new tax breaks.

Such factors led Kitzhaber to acknowledge the emergency legislative session was "extraordinarily awkward."

Still, Nike plans to create 500 or more jobs and invest at least $150 million in an expansion if the so-called "single sales factor" tax benefit remains in place, according to the Democratic governor. The governor will sign the bill, potentially as soon as next week, spokesman Tim Raphael said.

It was unclear whether Nike would actually move to expand outside of Oregon ? a company spokeswoman refused to say ? but the mere threat was enough to prompt action.

In a statement, Nike spokeswoman Mary Remuzzi thanked legislators for acting "quickly and decisively."

"This is a very positive step forward, not only for our company but for the state of Oregon," the statement said.

The prospect of many new workers is critical in a state that has no sales tax, limited property taxes and relies heavily on personal income taxes, said Republican Rep. Vicki Berger of Salem.

Nike employs thousands of people in Oregon, many of them at its headquarters in relatively high-wage jobs, including legal, design, sales, information technology and corporate strategy.

Company officials have been mum about their expansion plans, refusing to say where they'll build or what the new workers will do.

The company's presence near Beaverton, a Portland suburb, has helped make the area a hub for athletic and outdoor apparel companies. Columbia Sportswear's global headquarters is in Beaverton, and Adidas has its North American headquarters in Portland.

Nike has deep roots in Oregon, where it was created in the 1960s by a former middle-distance runner and his college track coach. Together, Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman built the company into one of the globe's most influential brands.

Knight also is the largest contributor to University of Oregon athletics, and his money is considered a key factor in vaulting the school's football program into national prominence.

Kitzhaber has said Nike approached his staff about a month ago, saying the company was being courted by other states but would expand in Oregon if officials promised to keep in place the substantial tax benefits for companies that employ many people in Oregon but sell most of their goods elsewhere.

The legislation passed Friday would authorize the governor to give Nike that promise for up to 30 years.

A handful of people opposed to the legislation set up anti-Nike signs in front of the Capitol as lawmakers met inside.

"You cannot do this in such a rushed manner, and this is just not an emergency," Susan Barrett of Portland told lawmakers.

It's Easy to Forget | Fatherhood Etc.

The Virgin, weighed?with the Word of God,?comes down the road:?if only you will shelter her.??St. John of the Cross

I was looking for something to write about St. John of the Cross when I stumbled across this quote, taken?in all probability?from a longer Advent hymn he composed for his fellow friars. It is the perfect mindset to hold as we journey metaphorically toward Bethlehem.

It?s easy to forget in a secular season so given over to consumption, just how poor the Virgin Mary and her husband Joseph were when they travelled to Bethlehem, or how destitute the setting was for the birth of the King of Kings. He wasn?t born in a palace, or, as most of us are today, in a hospital. He wasn?t even born at home, like almost everyone was in his time. He was born in a stable that according to Orthodox tradition was really a cave used to bed livestock. Even the humble little wooden barn found in most modern nativity sets is a step up from Jesus? birthplace.

It?s easy to forget that there are still many people in the world as poor as the Holy Family were, and even in our own country some people whose relative poverty?campared to the surronding society?at least matches theirs. Homeless families that wander our streets daily seeking shelter.

It?s easy to forget, when most of us are struggling to make ends meet with a little left over to give our kids a Christmas they can enjoy, that some families can?t manage much more than to keep their kids fed, and sometimes have to skip a meal themselves to do so.

It?s easy to forget, but I?m trying to remember.

Today?s Advent selection is also based on the words of St. John of the Cross (via YouTube):

Dickey on verge of becoming Blue Jay

3:04 PM: Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that as of this morning, seven players were involved in the deal, including four coming to the Mets and three going to the Blue Jays.

Puma hears that the Jays want a catcher back and speculates that Josh Thole could be involved. He has a rapport with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, so that would make sense. If that happens, it?s possible the Mets could take John Buck in the deal.

Andy McCullough of the Newark Star-Ledger hears that Blue Jays prospect right-handers Noah Syndergaard and Aaron Sanchez have also been discussed. Those are two impressive prospects, so this deal could get a little crazy.

2:54 PM: Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Mets and Blue Jays are ?inching toward the finish line? on the deal. Some players? medicals have been reviewed and OK?d, but there?s still work to be done. R.A. Dickey and Travis d?Arnaud are the centerpieces of the deal, but still no word on the other players involved.

12:55 PM: CBS Sports? Jon Heyman reports that the Mets rejected a package of Gose and Arencibia. The two sides have since agreed on d?Arnaud as the center piece in a deal for Dickey, but they are currently trying to finalize the last piece. Assuming they can agree on the other players in the deal, it?s now thought that Dickey is willing to talk about an extension.

11:42 AM: Hold the phone. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Anthony Gose is NOT part of the trade talks for R.A. Dickey. However, Travis d?Arnaud is.

11:19 AM: Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star reports that if the Blue Jays are to include d?Arnaud and Gose, they need to have Dickey signed to a two-year extension and receive a top prospect from the Mets.

9:30 AM: Andy Martino of the New York Daily News confirms that the Blue Jays are willing to offer d?Arnaud and Gose in a trade for Dickey. We?re still awaiting word on the other players involved.

8:15 PM: CBS Sports? Jon Heyman hears that the Mets and Blue Jays have reached agreement on the players involved. No word yet on the full scope of the trade.

Meanwhile, Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reports that the Blue Jays have been looking at the medicals on Dickey since at least yesterday afternoon. It?s yet another indication that a deal is close to being finalized.

1:27 AM: Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Mets and Blue Jays are ?on the verge? of a trade that would send Dickey to Toronto and d?Arnaud to New York. The teams are currently looking at medicals, so it sounds pretty close.

As Rosenthal mentioned earlier, Passan hears that more players are involved in the deal.

11:55 PM, Friday: Rosenthal and his colleague, Jon Paul Morosi, are reporting on FOXSports.com that Gose is likely to be included in the deal while the Mets are also expected to receive either d?Arnaud or Arencibia. As Rosenthal noted earlier, if d?Arnaud is included, the deal is likely to be expanded.

11:36 PM: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com confirms that d?Arnaud is ?very much in play? in trade talks for Dickey. However, he notes that the deal would be bigger, with multiple pieces going both ways.

You may recall that the trade talks between the Marlins and Blue Jays began with Josh Johnson and morphed into something much larger. While it?s unlikely 12 players will be involved this time, it probably won?t be a simple swap.

10:30 PM: Andy Martino of the New York Daily News was told by ?a person with direct knowledge of the discussions? that during the Winter Meetings, d?Arnaud was a ?must have? for the Mets to do a trade with the Blue Jays. Toronto resisted at the time, but a person involved in the potential trade has expressed a ?gut feeling? that d?Arnaud may be involved. Again, nothing confirmed.

Contrary to earlier reports, Martino hears that Dickey is willing to sign a contract extension if he?s traded to the Blue Jays. This could have a major impact on the return package.

8:00 PM: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports hears that the Mets may be getting prospect catcher Travis d?Arnaud back from the Blue Jays, though he cautions that the information is unconfirmed. However, he was discussed ?heavily? in trade talks along with fellow catcher J.P. Arencibia.

6:07 PM: Anthony DiComo of MLB.com was told by ?two people involved? to not expect resolution with Dickey tonight. Things could always change, but it appears he?ll remain with the Mets for at least one more day.

5:45 PM: FOX Sports? Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Mets and Blue Jays have made progress on a possible trade involving Dickey. However, it?s not a done deal yet.

Also, updating a previous story by Joel Sherman, Andy Martino of the New York Daily News writes that reports suggesting Dickey wouldn?t sign a contract extension with the Jays are false.

4:29 PM: Jon Heyman is hearing that the players coming back from Toronto ? assuming a deal can get done ? are?J.P. Arencibia and Anthony Gose, though that may just be speculation, as those two have been talked about in trades involving the Blue Jays for some time. And let?s keep in mind that this is all fluid and depend on Dickey being willing to sign an extension. We think. As we learned with the Shin-Soo Choo trade earlier this week, early reports may only be capturing part of the story.

Rosenthal says the Rangers are OUT on Dickey.

4:05 PM: Joel Sherman reports that the Mets and Blue Jays are far along in trade talks for Dickey ? and a deal could be close ? but that things are being held up by Dickey?s refusal to agree to sign a contract extension with Toronto. Now, he needn?t sign off on the trade ? he has no no-trade protection ? but obviously the Jays would be far more willing to give up real value to the Mets if they can lock up Dickey for what will, presumably, be three years instead of just 2013.

Updates, obviously, as warranted.

3:30 PM: In case you didn?t think that the Mets were serious about trading R.A. Dickey:

The Rangers have been talked about as a possible trade partner with the Mets for a couple of days. The Jays and Orioles, not so much.

The Top Prescription Drugs Of Abuse - Release-news.com

With prescription drug abuse still rising the top drugs of abuse should be known broadly to effectively stop this growing problem.?

Santa Cruz, California - Aside from alcohol and marijuana, prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse is the most common form of illicit drug use among those aged fourteen and older.? The problem can start in a number of ways--users may self-medicate, using someone else?s prescription; they may take it to get high; or they may become unintentionally dependent and start using their own medication in a manner other than that prescribed by their doctor.?

However there are three categories of abuse that everyone should know about to prevent this problem or stop it in a current user.

The Top Prescription Drugs of Abuse

The most commonly abused medical drugs can be categorized into the following classes:

???? Opioid Pain Relievers such as Oxycontin, Percocet or Vicodin.?
???? ADHD stimulants including Adderall, Concerta, or Ritalin.?
???? Anti-anxiety pills, which are central nervous system depressants.? This includes Valium and Xanax.
???? Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs containing dextromethorphan (DXM), mostly found in cough and cold medicine like Robitussin, NyQuil, Dimetapp and TheraFlu.

Users, especially teens, think that these drugs are safer than illicit drugs because they are prescribed by a doctor and their parents and other adults take them.? However, using these drugs in a manner other than that which the doctor recommends can be dangerous.? It leads to addiction and other health problems, including overdose.?

The Dangers of Prescription Drug Abuse

Narconon Vista Bay explains that each drug has a specific function, and even with proper use, they can have side effects.? Abusing medication can lead to potentially fatal consequences.? Here are a few complications that may arise from prescription drug abuse.

Stimulants: Drugs like Adderall and Ritalin have a large impact on the heart and blood vessels.? Taking large doses of these drugs can cause a dangerous spike in body temperature, irregular heartbeat, seizures and heart failure.? They can also lead to anxiety, hostility and paranoia.

Central Nervous System Depressants: These drugs slacken brain activity and can lead to drowsiness and loss of coordination, making it dangerous for users to be driving or operating heavy machinery.?

Opioids: These heavy painkillers can cause constipation, drowsiness and in large quantities can depress breathing.?

DXM: This substance, typically found in cough and cold medication, can produce numbness, nausea, vomiting, impaired motor function, and increased heart rate and blood pressure.? In some cases, the respiratory depression produced has led to brain damage due to not having enough oxygen in the brain.

All of these drugs are more dangerous when taken with other drugs or alcohol, which is often the case in drug abuse.? The potential for addiction is high, and users may find themselves experiencing withdrawal symptoms if they stop using them.?

These drugs can affect the brain in the same manner as illicit drugs, which is why many users become addicted to the euphoria they produce.? For example, stimulants act like cocaine in that they cause a rush of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that increases pleasure.? Opioids numb pain receptors and increase the pain threshold and can create a rush of euphoria in the same manner as heroin.?

The number of deaths caused by prescription drugs is higher than all other illicit drugs in all age groups. If you think someone has a prescription problem get them immediate help. To deal with prescription drug addiction at Vista Bay contact us today.

Art for Wealth?s Sake: Art Basel Paints a Picture of Miami?s Separate and Unequal Worlds

It?s 10 p.m. on a Friday night. A naked girl is splashing about in the swimming pool at the Standard Hotel Miami. She is from New York and runs a nonprofit for homeless teens. We?ll call her Liz: ?You?re so boring!? she yells from the middle of the pool.

It was a common refrain here during Art Basel Miami Beach?now the world?s largest contemporary art fair?where many of earth?s most privileged humans gather for a week of champagne and gawking at art (and at each other) in the sun.

The poolside celebration was for Terry Richardson, a fashion photographer known for his sexually charged (or sexually abusive, depending on your source) shoots. A cell phone company, HTC, spent $100,000 to sponsor the party, a book release for Richardson. This is a typical event, one of hundreds that occur during what is commonly referred to as ?Basel.?

MORE: Scenes From a Class War (VIDEOS)

Basel is now 11 years old. It?s gone from a decent sized art fair to an international marketing and branding orgy with few parallels. Because all the big collectors fly down private, and scores of cool young New Yorkers file in on JetBlue, luxury brands rush in to hit both their ?target demos? and ?tastemakers? in one shot.

In terms of tourism dollars, Basel is Miami?s highest grossing week. Hotels on South Beach were demanding thousands per night for rooms. The fair?s main sponsor was the honorable UBS, the very same Swiss bank that just settled a billion dollar fraud case with international authorities. UBS not only robs the world and stashes terrorist/dictator cash, it sponsors art fairs too?cool guys.

Most Miamians don?t care about Art Basel. The city is only 11 percent white (far and away the primary Basel target demographic), and most of the 40 percent Hispanic and 20 percent black populations live far from the South Beach glam, many in poverty. Miami has the second widest gap between rich and poor in America, after New York. Blacks make an average of $15,000 a year. Whites double that, at $37,000. But at $19,000, the city?s majority Hispanics aren?t doing so well either.

Disparity defines the art world too, with its hungry artists and rich collectors and patrons. So it?s fitting that the largest contemporary art fair in the world happens in Miami.

Few people are more detached from the short-end reality of income disparity than the global art tribe. These arbiters of the cultural elite fly around the world to various openings and fairs then retreat to galleries, museums and studios in their home cities before heading out again. Of course, there are exceptions. Some artists at Basel retain a socio-politico aesthetic. A good example is Barbara Krueger, whose text-orientated pieces mocking consumerism and political power were selling for $200,000 to $500,000 and became the talk of the fair.

Bearing many hallmarks of a third world city, Miami breaks down into two distinct populations. The rich live across Biscayne Bay on beautiful beaches and gated islands. The poor are stretched across downtown?s grid, where every block headed west from the bay is worse than the one before it. The city has few economically diverse neighborhoods.

The two Miamis can easily be visited on the same day. Last week. Alex ?A-Rod? Rodriguez, the New York Yankee third baseman with the largest sports contract in history, was having a party in his $30 million modernist manse.

I skipped A Rod?s soiree, mainly because I hate the Yankees, to hang out with Dee, a 22-year-old drug dealer who lives on west 20th Street downtown. All he wanted was customers: ?Man, who down here needs anything? I?m fucking broke. I live in the projects with my aunt. Gotta get out.?

Dee said he?d take any job?as in, ?I?ll work at Chick-fil-A, man!? Saddled with a criminal record, he?s never been hired anywhere.

We cruised over to 75th Street, the main drag in Little Haiti, where public housing is painted lime green and similarly awesome pastel paint jobs cover buildings advertising W.I.C and Western Union.

?There are no banks here,? Dee tells me. ?We don?t have enough money.?

UBS?where are you?

The South Beach Basel crowd hosted quite a few Hurricane Sandy benefits. But I didn?t find one art world benefit for Miami?s poor. There is a definite willful ignorance in plopping your billionaires down at dinners and six-figure parties in the name of ?culture? while ignoring masses of people who are in dire need of said culture and are readily at hand: The impoverished residents of Miami.

Back in New York, I catch up with Liz, the naked pool gal. She?s in Tompkins Square Park, the epicenter of Manhattan?s Lower East Side. Stella is smiling. Her art world disdain has clearly dried off.

?I have no idea why I was in Miami,? she says. ?Who were those people? Why are they so boring, and why did that one guy in the black suit keep saying Le Baron over and over again??

Around the same time I get a text from Dee. ?You know anyone still down here? Tryna get that $.?

I inform Lee that Le Baron is a Parisian disco that does a chic party every night of Basel.
