Arima Communications looks to ship 23-25 million handsets in 2012

Arima Communications is expected to ship a total of 23-25 million handsets in 2012, of which 15-16 million units will be feature phones and the remaining 8-10 million units smartphone models.
Buoyed by orders from clients in the US and Japan, Arima will see its shipments surge to over five million units in the second quarter of 2012 and to 7-8 million units in the third and fourth quarter, the sources estimated.
Arima's shipments of smartphones will start gaining momentum in the second half of the year, covering models built on MediaTek, Qualcomm and ST-Ericsson platforms, the sources indicated.
With Motorola Mobility and Sony Mobile Communications both aiming to ship 30 million smartphones in 2012, Taiwan-based handset ODMs, including Arima, Compal Communications, Foxconn Electronics and Foxconn International Holding (FIH), are all expected to land more windfall orders, commented the sources.

BOSTON (February 23, 2012, 5:00 pm ET) Researchers have combined bioactive peptides to successfully stimulate wound healing. The in vitro and in vivo study, published today in PLoS ONE, demonstrates that the combination of two peptides stimulates the growth of blood vessels and promotes re-growth of tissue. Further development of these peptides could lead to a new treatment for chronic and acute wounds.
The team tested a newly-created peptide, UN3, in pre-clinical models aimed to simulate impaired wound healing as is seen in patients with peripheral vascular diseases or uncontrolled diabetes. The peptide led to a 50% increase in blood vessel wall development, a 250% increase in growth of blood vessels, and a 300% increase in cell migration in response to the injury.
"Using double-blinded in vivo experiments, we then applied the wound-healing peptide UN3 with a peptide created during a previous study, named comb1. We found that, together, the two out-performed all control groups, including the only FDA-approved growth factor-containing drug for treating diabetic wounds, becaplermin," said first author, Tatiana Demidova-Rice, PhD, now a graduate of the cell, molecular and developmental biology program at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences.
In December 2010, Herman and Demidova-Rice identified several peptides from a Clostridium histolyticum collagenase treatment of bio-synthesized extracellular matrix. The investigators then went on to cull key peptides and, from these, they created the peptide, comb1, possessing several strategic features, including its ability to stimulate angiogenesis by increasing blood vessel growth by 200% in vitro.
The second wound-healing peptide, UN3, identified in the current study, was created and modified from two naturally occurring peptides that are normally present in trace amounts and found in human platelet-rich plasma.
"The confirmation that these peptides could act synergistically to improve human wound healing moves our research one significant step closer to clinical application. We hope that someday soon, we may be able to help transform the way in which wound care is being delivered in civilian and combat settings," said Ira Herman, PhD, professor of molecular physiology and pharmacology at Tufts University School of Medicine. Professor Herman is director, molecular and cellular physiology graduate program at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and director, Center for Innovations in Wound Healing Research, Tufts University.
"The wound-healing peptides should also prove strategic as we continue developing 'smart' devices or fully-vascularized living tissue constructs for burn patients or those patients suffering with diabetic plantar or venous stasis ulcers. Clinical trials using the peptides will be the next step," Herman continued. Tufts University has filed patent applications related to the wound-healing peptides.
Tufts Center for Innovations in Wound Healing Research brings together experts from Tufts' medical, dental, veterinary and engineering schools, as well as Tufts Medical Center and local research institutes with a focus on creating innovative wound healing therapeutics as well as fully-vascularized organ constructs for personalized regenerative medicine.
Demidova-Rice is now at the Edwin L. Steele Laboratory for Tumor Biology in the department of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Additional authors include Lindsey Wolf, BS, formerly a research assistant at TUSM, now a graduate student working towards a PhD degree in the department of molecular genetics and microbiology at the University of Texas at Austin; Jeffry Deckenback, PhD, who was a postdoctoral fellow in the Herman lab while the work was being carried out; and Michael R. Hamblin, PhD, a principal investigator at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and associate professor in the department of dermatology at Harvard Medical School.

For Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter?s trailer launch, 20th Century Fox brought out director Timur Bekmambetov and star Benjamin Walker to talk about the movie. But not just anywhere, they brought them to Springfield, Illinois ? the home of Lincoln?s tomb and his library and museum. We got a chance to talk to the two about the film and about Lincoln in the museum, after having been shown the film?s teaser and a couple of clips.? Before going any further, here?s the domestic and international teaser trailer for the film.
Because it?s a vampire movie, the footage presentation and our interviews were conducted in the dead of night. But spirits were high (and not just because of the free booze) after the trailer and footage presentation. We were given a time and question limit, so we asked about two things, basically, how much of Lincoln they put in the movie, and what they would tell audiences about the film that the trailer didn?t cover. As Bekmambetov notes, this is meant to be a teaser, and the meat of the project will be coming as we get closer to the movie. As the film is both an A-list production, but ? as Walker notes ? not based on a franchise, they need audiences willing to give an odd idea a try.

CHICAGO - A 48-year-old Chicago public school teacher used the "n-word" as part of a lesson on the perils and pitfalls of racism, and it landed him a five-day suspension from his job. The teacher is fighting back, filing a federal lawsuit against the district and claiming that his civil rights have been violated.
Lincoln Brown, a 21-year veteran teacher and native of Chicago's Hyde Park, used the word in his sixth grade classroom at Murray Language Academy on Oct. 4, 2011 after discovering a note that female student was passing had the slur written on it as apart of some rap lyrics. Brown, who is white, used the note as an opportunity to teach lesson about racism in the context of Huckleberry Finn.

In almost impeccable timing, as soon as Brown said the "n-word," the school's principal, George Mason, walked in the room, and the trouble started.
"This cannot be apart of who I am," Brown said during a press conference with his attorney. "My character has been assassinated."
Mason gave a different account of the incident and charged Brown with "using verbally abusive language to or in front of students" and "cruel, immoral, negligent or criminal conduct or communication to a student, that causes psychological or physical harm" which is in violation of the Chicago Public Schools policy. Mason disputed the context in which Brown used the n-word.
"We've talked about racial stereotyping and how words really shape people's ideas of who you are," Brown said. "I cannot tell you how much it hurts me to say that word."
Following a disciplinary hearing, Brown was suspended for five days without pay. CPS denied Brown's appeal of the suspension on grounds that he "engaged in inappropriate discussions with sixth-grade students during instructional time."

Despite its commitment to streaming movies and TV, Netflix is offering its DVD-only service option to new customers again, but will it tempt those who have converted to Redbox?
When Netflix implemented in September its highly unpopular plan to separate its DVD and streaming plans and 60 percent price hike?(which met with vehement social media scorn for days and weeks following the announcement in July), it removed the DVD-only option for new customers, making it available only as an add-on to a streaming plan at sign-up for an additional $8 a month (one DVD out-at-a-time).
For a brief time, Netflix teased (and further irritated) members with the promise of a DVD-only spin-off called Qwikster, but that?never materialized.

OSLO, Norway ? An Iraqi-born Islamist cleric goes on trial Wednesday for allegedly making death threats against politicians and encouraging suicide bombings in Iraq, and some see the case as a test of Norway's terror laws and its freedom of speech.
Prosecutor Geir Evanger described the charges against Mullah Krekar, 55, as serious and said Tuesday the defendant could receive up to 20 years in prison if he's convicted in Oslo District Court.
Krekar arrived in Norway from Iraq in 1991 and was given refugee status. He made several visits to Iraq and during them founded the Kurdish Ansar al-Islam, an al-Qaida-linked group listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and other nations. It is suspected of organizing suicide bombings against U.S.-led coalition forces in Iraq.
A local court declared Krekar a national security threat and ordered him deported in 2005, but later postponed the move because of concerns he could face execution or torture in Iraq.
Two years ago, Krekar told foreign reporters in Oslo that if he were deported to Iraq and killed, Norwegian officials would "pay with their lives," according to a transcript included in the indictment.
Prosecutors say the defendant violated Norwegian terror laws because the threats were meant to cause fear in society and force officials to halt the deportation order.
Charges also include comments Krekar made on NBC's news program "The Wanted" in 2009. He said the American people deserved the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, and encouraged suicide bombings against Americans in Iraq. He also is charged with making death threats against others on various websites.
Krekar's lawyer, Brynjar Meling, said Krekar rejects the charges and stands by what he said, but that he did not break the law.
"It should not be looked upon as threats," Meling said, adding that the trial will be "a test case" for drawing the line between Norwegian terror laws and freedom of speech.
Evanger, the prosecutor, disagreed.
"Krekar gave his interviews in Norway, so he can be charged for such threats under Norwegian law," Evanger said. "Under no circumstances can plain death threats be protected by freedom of speech."
Krekar has denied links to al-Qaida and has said he no longer leads Ansar al-Islam.
