Clijsters beats Venus Williams in farewell game

ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) ? Former No. 1 Kim Clijsters ended her career with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Venus Williams in a ceremonial farewell match in Belgium.

Clijsters retired after the U.S. Open but organized a match to thank her fans, 13,000 of whom turned up at Antwerp Sports Palace, including Crown Prince Phillipe and Princess Mathilde.

In the lighthearted encounter, Clijsters was destined to win but still wowed the crowd with the play that made her famous before injuries added to her retirement at 29.

Clijsters beat Williams on the way to her last two U.S. Open titles, in 2009 and 2010, and she held a 7-6 edge over the American on the WTA Tour. She also won at Flushing Meadow in 2005 and earned the 2011 Australian Open crown.

"Dinosaur" Berlusconi dumped by Italy's Catholic church

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Italy's Catholic Church used to support Silvio Berlusconi as a bulwark against leftist governments and fears they might legalize gay marriage and euthanasia.

There will be no blessing this time.

"Like a bolt out of the blue, the dinosaur returns and throws the whole country into chaos".

This was not a headline from an anti-Berlusconi paper but from an editorial in Famiglia Cristiana, an influential Catholic magazine with one of Italy's largest weekly circulations, reacting to the possibility of his political rebirth.

Berlusconi is teasing voters over whether he will, or will not, be a candidate for prime minister in an Italian election early next year. Famiglia Cristiana accused the 76-year-old of selling Italians a mirage.

"This is pure populism, the Pied Piper has returned to enchant people with his alluring promises. But this is clear folly, which nullifies the sacrifices made by families and blocks the virtuous path of reforms, even if they are unpopular," it said.

The former prime minister's adversaries accuse him of wanting to return to front-line politics to protect his business interests and regain partial and temporary immunity in trials for corruption and paying for sex with a minor.

On Monday, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, head of the Italian Bishops Conference, made it clear where he stood on the issue.

"I am shocked by the irresponsibility of people who want to look after their own affairs while the house is still on fire," Bagnasco said.

UNHOLY ALLIANCE

The Church stood by Berlusconi nearly to the end of his last government, which collapsed in November 2011. Mario Monti then stepped in at the head of technocrat government to lead Italy away from the risk of a Greek-style economic crisis.

Despite an array of political and sexual scandals - including reports of wild "bunga bunga" parties with young women - Berlusconi was backed by the Church because he was considered the lesser of two evils.

"The Church's alliance with Berlusconi was based on their joint fear of the left. Berlusconi guaranteed that as along as he was in government, he would not budge on issues the Church considered non-negotiable," said Catholic author Andrea Tornielli.

"The Church held its nose but knew it could rest easy on issues such as gay marriage, euthanasia and bio-ethical questions like in-vitro fertilization," Tornielli, who also runs the influential website Vatican Insider, told Reuters.

Now, the Vatican has made it clear it considers Berlusconi a political relic and has expressed alarm at his populist outbursts such as saying Germany was the root of Italy's economic problems.

"I think the risks of propaganda of this kind are clear because it does not correspond to reality ... some of his stands have been incoherent," said Gian Maria Vian, editor of the Vatican's newspaper, Osservatore Romano.

Monti goes to mass every Sunday with his wife of 40 years, and he has impressed the Vatican with his calmness and what the Church sees as a genuine desire to fix the country's economic problems and avoid social unrest of the kind seen in Greece.

"The Church would be very happy if Monti succeeds himself as prime minister or at least if he has a role in the next government," Tornielli said.

Pier Luigi Bersani, the centre-left leader and former communist, is likely to be the next prime minister if Monti does not run and was an anti-cleric in his youth.

But in a recent debate, Bersani said one of his heroes was Pope John XXIII, the pontiff who introduced reforms into the Church 50 years ago and was regarded as one of the 20th century's greatest progressives.

14-Year-Old Real Estate Investor: Today Some Houses, Tomorrow...

A girl named Willow [Florida Teen Buys Second Home] is now an inspiration to real estate investors all over the country. In January 2012, at the tender age of 14, she purchased her first property, a short sale in Port Charlotte, FL, for only $12,000.

Willow?s Realtor mother, Shannon, took title to the property (since Willow is a minor) and split the cost to purchase the property and the renovations. Once the rehab work was complete, they rented it out. In October 2012, they purchased a second property together for $17,500 with the same funding arrangement.

Where did Willow get the money and why did she want to get into real estate investing?

14 year-old real estate investor

Willow's goal is to own 10 houses free and clear by her 18th birthday.

It began when she noticed someone giving away some furniture on the side of the road. She offered to sell it and split the proceeds, but the owner told her she could keep whatever she made.

That started an entrepreneurial venture that included her claiming free stuff on Craigslist, in abandoned homes, on the side of the road?even leftover yard sale items. She then sold those items at her own yard sales or on Craigslist.

She began to rack up the money, not saving up for anything in particular, just putting it in the bank.

Her mother is a real estate agent, so Willow was used to being around real estate, but she was bored by it. Then she watched her mom buy a run-down property, rehab it, and sell it for a profit.

A light went off inside Willow?s head, and she wanted in on the next deal. In January 2012, Willow poured the profits from her ?free junk? flipping business into her first real estate deal.

Now at age 15, Willow Tufano has done more real estate deals than many of the people reading this article. If that?s you, I?m sure that comment didn?t feel very good. But it?s true, and if you want to be a real estate investor but haven?t done your first deal yet, perhaps you will take some lessons from Willow?

Lesson #1 ? Get a Mentor

Willow?s mentor is her mom, Shannon. No man or woman is an island. Everyone has mentors. Get one.

?Lesson #2 ? Do Deals You Can Handle

You may not live in an area where you can buy a $12,000 house like Willow, but when you use the right paperwork and you structure the deals correctly, you don?t need large amounts of money (or any money at all, in some cases) to acquire real estate. But don?t go after deals you can?t afford or handle.

For example, bank-owned properties listed on the MLS with an agent often require significant cash, credit, or both. If you don?t have cash, good credit, or the ability to qualify for an investor bank loan, don?t go after foreclosures. Go after ?For Sale By Owners? and structure creative financing terms. Do deals that you can handle.

?Lesson #3 ? Just Do It

Legally, Willow can?t own real estate until she is age 18. But that didn?t stop her. She overcame that obstacle and became a real estate investor anyway. What?s holding you back? Time? Money? Fear? Whatever it is, you can overcome it.

You may be thinking, well that?s easy for Willow because she has no responsibilities, no kids, no job, no alimony, no child support. Think about it. She was 14. You have far more advantages in getting started than she does. When I was first getting started, I went homeless. No matter where you are, you don?t have an excuse. You can do it. Just do it.

Although Willow has invested most of her money into real estate, she still allocates a few bucks to treating herself to some toys. She purchased an Xbox for $200 and later traded it up for a brand new $1,200 stand-up paddle board.

When asked if her friends ask her how she makes her money or how to invest in real estate, she quickly responds, ?None of my friends have ever asked me that. Some people want me to buy them things, but none of them ask to learn how to make their own money.?

Unfortunately, I?ve found the same thing to be true in my life.

What are Willow?s future plans? Her goal is to own 10 houses free and clear by her 18th birthday. Then, she wants to trade up to some commercial real estate like she learned playing Monopoly, 4 green houses for 1 red hotel. As far as a career, Willow says, ?I?m going to keep investing. Hopefully that will be the only thing I have to do to have a good income.?

Fortunately, I?ve found in my life that you can make all the money you?ll ever need investing in real estate.

If you have kids, or grandkids, or nieces and nephews, make sure you forward this article to them. Share this with your social networks. Entrepreneurship is one of the reasons why this country is so great. Spread the message.

You?ve read my thoughts on the matter. What are your thoughts on this story?

Protesters to march on Michigan capitol over "right-to-work" vote

LANSING, Michigan (Reuters) - As many as 10,000 labor union workers from throughout Michigan and the U.S. Midwest are expected to march on the Michigan Capitol building in freezing temperatures on Tuesday to protest likely passage of a "right-to-work" law.

The Republican-controlled Michigan House of Representatives will consider two and perhaps three bills on Tuesday that would prohibit unions from compelling private sector workers and government employees to pay union dues.

The right-to-work movement has been growing in the country since Wisconsin fought a similar battle with unions over two years ago.

Michigan would become the 24th state to enact right-to-work provisions and passage of the legislation would deal a stunning blow to the power of organized labor in the United States.

Michigan is home of the heavily unionized U.S. auto industry, with some 700 manufacturing plants in the state. It is also the birthplace of the United Auto Workers, the richest U.S. labor union.

While the new laws are not expected to have much immediate impact because existing union contracts would be preserved, they could, over time, further weaken the UAW, which has already seen its influence wane in negotiating with the major automakers.

Right-to-work laws typically allow workers to hold a job without being forced to join a union or pay union dues.

Last Thursday, when the senate passed two bills and the House also considered right-to-work legislation, protesters converged on Lansing. Several people were arrested and officials sealed the Capitol from the public.

"We support people exercising their constitutional rights to protest," said Inspector Gene Adamczyk of the Michigan State Police. "But we need them to do it in an orderly manner."

President Barack Obama waded into the debate during a visit to the Daimler Detroit Diesel plant in Redford, Michigan on Monday, criticizing the Republican right-to-work effort.

"What they're really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money," Obama said.

School teachers are among those expected to march on the Capitol on Tuesday. Several school districts will not hold classes on Tuesday due to teacher and staff absences, Detroit newspapers and television stations reported.

Labor leaders such as UAW President Bob King say they were blindsided by Republican Governor Rick Snyder, who last Thursday announced he was supporting right-to-work after nearly two years of saying the issue was too divisive.

King was unsuccessful in more than a week of talks with Snyder and his staff in staving off the right-to-work push by the Republicans, who will lose several seats when newly elected members take their seats in the state house and senate in January.

Michigan has the fifth highest percentage of unionized workers in the United States at 17.5 percent and the Detroit area is headquarters for General Motors Co, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler, which is majority owned by Fiat SpA.

Speek Receives $1.2M In Seed Stage Funding For VoIP Service ...

Speek has received $1.2 million in early stage investment for its VOIP service that replaces the antiquated conference call experience of ?calling a 10-digit number and entering ?a pass code. Investors were not disclosed. Previous investors have included the CIT Gap Funds, a?family of seed- and early-stage investment funds placing near-equity and equity investments in Virginia-based?technology,?life science, and cleantech?companies.

As Co-Founder and CEO John Bracken explains it, Speek was invented because the user conference call experience is awful and antiquated. The goal for Speek is to instead make the experience super simple for people and provide a high quality call.

Speek hopes to disrupt the market with a service that gives each customer a unique web address of their choosing. The web address connects the customer to a call that provides what they call a ?conference table,? experience that allows participants to see who is on the call and who is talking.?Identity is core to the Speek service. Customers that sign up are identified in the call by their name, e-mail address and associated social networks.

There is now download required. The service comes integrated with Dropbox so people may share files by dragging them to the visual table. ?A simple chat feature provides a visual cue for the other participants. It also has a mute feature.

The caller receives a?record of all their calls, which helps keep the data stored in one place. It includes the name, email addresses and the phone numbers of the callers. The chat transcript is also saved. Data can also be shared.

myspeekcall

Bracken said they have had 50 to 100 people on the platform at any one time but it?s best suited for ten to 15 people.

Speek hosts its service on the backbone of the Level3 fiber network.

Speek will compete in the $3 billion audio conference market ?and by extension the $20 to $25 billion unified communications market.?Competitors are GoToMeeting, WebEx and really any service that gives out a 10-digit number and a pin.

In beta since June, the service is intended for small businesses or the person in a large business who wants an alternatieve to traditional conference calls.

I like this service. It lacks the collaboration features of web conferencing services but I expect that will come. The team is strong. Bracken is one of the co-founders of?Evite.com, which sold to Ticketmaster in 2001. Danny Boice is the CTO. He is the ?founder of Jaxara, which sold to Pantheon in 2006.

Speek makes the conference call experience much more pleasant. I do a lot of conference calls. The number, the pass code and all the audio prompts are maddening. You never know who is speaking. The market needs more alternatives like Speek that make the experience more visual and easier to use.

Super simple conference calling. No dial-ins, no pins, no downloads. Speek makes conferencing calling simple! No more ten digit numbers or pins to remember. Speek allows callers to join a conference call via a personal link that is easy to remember (e.g. speek.com/yourname). No downloads are required, just join your call via the phone or VOIP.
