(AP) ? Three men arrested earlier this week when police raided a Chicago apartment were being held Saturday on terrorism conspiracy charges, accused of trying to make Molotov cocktails ahead of the NATO summit.

Their attorney, Sarah Gelsomino, said the men are "absolutely in shock and have no idea where these charges are coming from."

They were scheduled to be in court later Saturday for a bond hearing on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorism, possession of an explosive or incendiary device and providing material support for terrorism.

Six others arrested Wednesday in the South Side raid were released Friday without being charged.

Among the items seized by federal authorities was beer-making equipment, Gelsomino said.

Chicago police Lt. Kenneth Stoppa declined to elaborate on the case beyond confirming the charges against the three who were still in custody.

Police identified the men being held as Brian Church, 20, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Jared Chase, 24, of Keene, N.H.; and Brent Vincent Betterly, 24. A police spokesman gave Betterly's hometown as Oakland Park, Mass., but no such town exists. There is an Oakland Park, Fla., that is near Fort Lauderdale.

The three came to Chicago in late April to take part in May Day protests, said activist Bill Vassilakis, who said he let them stay in his apartment.

He said Betterly was an industrial electrician and had volunteered to help wire service at The Plant, a former meatpacking facility that has been turned into a food incubator with the city's backing.

Vassilakis said he thought the charges were unwarranted.

"All I can say about that is, if you knew Brent, you would find that to be the most ridiculous thing you've ever heard. He was the most stand-up guy that was staying with me. He and the other guys had done nothing but volunteer their time and energy," he said."

Authorities in Oakland Park, Fla., said Betterly and two other young men walked into a public high school last fall after a night of tequila drinking and took a swim in the pool, according to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

They stole fire extinguishers from three school buses, discharged one and smashed a cafeteria window with another. The vandalism caused about $2,000 in damage, the newspaper said.

Betterly was charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief.

Security has been high throughout the city in preparation for the summit, where delegations from about 60 countries will discuss the war in Afghanistan and European missile defense.

Elsewhere, Chicago was mostly quiet. Downtown streets were largely empty, though that is not unusual for a weekend. Security guards stood watch outside many downtown buildings. In places, the guards almost outnumbered pedestrians.

Outside the Chicago Board of Trade, a frequent target of Occupy protesters, a lone protester wore a sign about wasteful military spending.

Closer to the summit site, commuter rail service was halted for a short time so police could investigate a suspicious package on a train running beneath the convention center where diplomats will be meeting. Investigators determined there was no threat.

Among the pre-NATO protests planned for Saturday was a march on the home of Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The bigger show will be on Sunday, the start of the two-day NATO summit, when thousands of protesters are expected to march 2? miles from a band shell on Lake Michigan to the McCormick Place convention center, where delegates will be meeting.

On Friday, police on bicycles and foot tailed activists through the streets but ignored taunts and went out of their way to make as few arrests as possible. Protesters made a lot of noise and tried to evade police, but otherwise were relatively uneventful.

In all, police said there was a single arrest on a charge of aggravated battery of a police officer. Another man was briefly taken into custody, but he was released a short time later after being questioned by police, a department spokesman said.

Michael Olstewski, a recent music school graduate who came to Chicago from Atlanta, was one of hundreds of protesters who took to the streets Friday for a spontaneous march. He said he would not rule out provoking police to arrest him later "if I feel it's strategic and a powerful statement."

Cancer Patient Allegedly Fired Because Of Her Condition | Breaking ...

cancer patient fired twice over her condition Connie Robinson has been fighting breast cancer for the past three years. That battle alone is enough for one person to endure.

But, during that same period, Robinson says she has been fighting for her right to work. The Daily Mail reports that Robinson has been fired twice because of technicalities from various medical and disabilities laws that are suppose to protect people like her.

One year after taking a job as an employment specialist in 2009, she learned that she had breast cancer. She left work to undertake chemotherapy. But, during her last week of chemo, she was let go because her employer told her she exhausted a federal leave act that allows her to be away from work for a certain number of days, according to the Daily Mail. She later received a severance package.

?I worked even when I was sick,? Robinson said. ?And it didn?t matter. You don?t matter.?

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the American Disabilities Act (ADA) are the two federal acts that protect people with illnesses or disabilities that affect their ability to work.

Her previous employer then encouraged her to apply for a non-profit position funded by a grant. But, given Robinson?s long family history with cancer, she became ill again in the spring of 2010 and was forced into chemotherapy once more. Several months later when she regained her health and was ready to work, she learned that she had been replaced. Her job was a temporary position which is given fewer protections under FMLA and ADA than fulltime employees.

?I was blaming myself,? Robinson said in tears. ?What if I hadn?t taken the chemo??

Both ADA and FMLA gives employees a certain time frame to fight a dismissal if they feel they were discriminated against. But, because Robinson was in the middle of fighting for her life, she had neither the time nor the wherewithal to file a grievance.

But one problem with both acts, according to employment lawyer Harris Butler, is that there are not enough protections for employees. ?If the employer wants to let you go, there is not a whole lot you can do about it,? he said.

According to the U.S. Equal Employment And Opportunity Commission, not everyone with a disability can be protected by the law. A person can prove that he or she has a disability in one of three ways:

  • A person may be disabled if he or she has a physical or mental condition that substantially limits a major life activity (such as walking, talking, seeing, hearing, or learning).
  • A person may be disabled if he or she has a history of a disability (such as cancer that is in remission).
  • A person may be disabled if he is believed to have a physical or mental impairment that is not transitory (lasting or expected to last six months or less) and minor (even if he does not have such an impairment).

Dr. Susan Schaffer, Robinson?s oncologist, says that stress from a job that is unsympathetic to an employee?s medical condition can negatively affect their treatment. ?I hear case after case of patients telling me ?my work is not good and if I miss a day, they?re gonna fire me?? Schaffer said.

Right now Robinson is cancer-free! That is the good news. The bad news is that she is worried about paying her bills because she is out of work.

Let us hope that Robinson can find an employer who is supportive of her medical issues and that her cancer stays away for good.

Love Burns Is Off Beat Comedy About Modern Relationships ...

?

Mark Della Ventura and David Michael Sirois vie for the affections of Ashley Price in Love Burns at Thinking Cap Theatre

By Bill Hirschman

Seeing life through the prism of offbeat characters such as the oddballs populating the absurdist comedy Love Burns sometimes helps us perceive the modern world more clearly than any naturalistic drama.

The two daffy playlets produced by Thinking Cap Theatre are bitingly funny and sharply critical in their depiction of what passes for romance among twenty-somethings in the 21st Century. We?re laughing at them, but we?re also a little worried at the characters? shallow definition of love.

That?s likely exactly what playwright Cherie Vogelstein wants you to walk away thinking after chuckling steadily at these two pieces, Date With a Stranger and All About Al.

Director Nicole Stodard and a quartet of fine actors deftly play these strange situations and beyond quirky denizens with fearless abandon ? and at a speedy clip.

Both extended skits occur at a Starbucks-like coffee house, the new townhall meeting place for post-Millenial social interaction, presided over by a barista (Shira Abergel) who introduces and closes each act crooning a song while playing a ukulele.

In the first play, a creepy health club salesman ?(David Michael Sirois) starts to hit on a lovely young woman (Ashley Price) who seems normal until she starts stealing sugar dispensers off the tables. Then she starts to come on to him with an aggressiveness that defies belief ? and he responds in kind.

In the next 20 minutes or so, the two will race ? and we mean race ? through the entire arc of a modern relationship. Every twist and turn from the tentative exploration of each other?s personalities to the ugly breakup just sprint by. The script jets through a score of recognizable stages in an affair. The fact that they whiz past rational transitions just digs the satirical knife in deeper, lampooning how predictable and shallow relationships have become. But the lack of those transitions is indeed hilarious, especially in the deft hairpin turns by Price and Sirois.

The second act is only slightly less crazed. Sirois plays a self-absorbed handsome young man awaiting the appearance of his girlfriend (Price) so he can break up with her. Into the same coffee shop comes an old friend (Mark Della Ventura), a lovable schlub who wears Cookie Monster pajama bottoms in public and who has recently broken up with his girlfriend. He makes Sirois explain why he?s breaking up the relationship and then forces him to practice the breakup script for him before the woman arrives. Needy and lonely, Della Ventura?s character second guesses and punctures the bogus nature of Sirois? complaints about the woman. Eventually, he makes Sirois change his mind, but for the wrong reasons.

Sirois and Della Ventura are close friends and colleagues in real life and their smooth banter, the linchpin to Sirois? own play Brothers Beckett, is among the evening?s strengths.

Credit Stodard with helping the actors excavate every nuance and every laugh in Vogelstein?s script, and sending it flying by you as if the words and emotions were facets of a door-slamming farce.

The entire evening is not even 90 minutes including an intermission in which you can buy coffee, wine and pastries from the barista station on the set in Empire stage?s tiny living room-sized auditorium. But best of all, Abergel serenades you with a short set of offbeat tunes in keeping with the evening?s theme. She has a rich lovely voice perfectly complemented by her work on the ukulele and guitar, plus an occasional whistled bridge. Among the numbers is a lovely, but unnerving song in which a woman says she?s glad her boyfriend hit her when she was unfaithful because it proves he loves her. ?Creepy,? she acknowledges. ?And in tune with everything else in this evening?s world view.

Love Burns through May 26 by Thinking Cap Theatre, performing at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr., Fort Lauderdale (north of Sunrise just east of the railroad tracks) 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Tickets $25 and includes a 15-minute intermission with live music. Call (954) 678-1496 or visit ThinkingCapTheatre.com.

'Idol' reveals its 2 finalists after shocking cut

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Michael Becker / FOX

Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez are the finalists of season 11 of "American Idol"

The judges are going to have to find themselves a new favorite to promote in the ?American Idol? finale.

Joshua Ledet, who set the unofficial record for Most Standing Ovations From the Judges with his consistently big performances this season, was voted off the show on Thursday. He finished in third place, while Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez move on to compete for the title next week.

If he likes, Joshua can blame mentor Jimmy Iovine, who said that in hindsight, he wished he?d picked something that offered more of a melody than Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" for the teenager to perform Wednesday. He also regretted his pick for Jessica, thus shattering the ?Idol? record of self-critical comments in one night. (He?ll need a remedial course of ?Idol 201: The Art of Never Admitting Mistakes? if he wants to come back next season.) And they were more than empty words -- Jimmy seemed genuinely upset with himself when the results were announced, perhaps wondering if a better pick on his part would have been a game-changer.

Joshua could also blame a backlash or overconfidence stemming from the judges? fervent support of him over the past month, though that sure hadn?t hurt him over the previous few weeks. But really, he can probably blame his growling most of all. In a final three as close as this one appears to be, any little mistake hurts, and his over-the-top crashing about the stage on his final song didn?t do much to win the tender loving care of the audience. When in doubt, he tends to shout, and ultimately, it looks like the viewers plugged up their ears instead of picking up the phones for him.

That sets up the Phillip-Jessica finale, or Dave Matthews 2.0 vs. The Oldest-Sounding Teenager in America. But the big question next week won?t just concern who?s going to win. We'll also find out whether Ford will give Phillip a car like it normally does for the two finalists, despite the fact that he?s been absent from the video shoots. Is he secretly in league with the Japanese auto companies? And what are they going to do for that Ford video shoot next week? Have Jessica sing by herself? (Remember: Phillip has a doctor's note to skip filming those!)

Joshua can also take solace in the fact that he wasn?t the worst performer to take the stage this week. That would go to a lip-synching Lisa Marie Presley, who dragged herself onto the ?Idol? stage for the first time. She was part of a gothic set that had her both looking and sounding like something undead. Somewhere up there, Elvis is probably shaking his head and wondering whether she?s studied tapes of him performing. He?s also probably thinking that if he were alive, he?d make one heck of an ?Idol? judge.

But for now, it's the viewers who have spoken, and it?ll be a former pawn-shop worker or a California teenager who gets the confetti and the million-dollar deal on Wednesday.

Are you surprised that Joshua was cut? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!?Plus, join writer Craig Berman at 12:30 PT/3:30 ET on finale day, May 23, to chat about the final performances and who you think will win.?Sign up for a reminder!

Cel-Factor technology claims to protect humans from EMF radiation ...

At the CTIA Wireless event last week, bio-resonance technology company von Hoffmann & Partner Technologies together with CeL-Factor introduced its new line of EMF radiation protection devices. The CeL-Factor technology uses its own Energetic Quanta Cymatics Communication Technology (EQCCT) to protect wireless device users from absorbing the effects of EMF radiation.

The company claims that its technology will help mobile users in two ways: keep a person?s head temperature cooler when using a cell phone, and keep a cell phone user?s blood in a normal state (note that this has not been proven yet). von Hoffmann and Partner Technologies reportedly participated in a comprehensive study conducted at the world renowned Jasper Clinical Research and Development to determine its effectiveness in diminishing the harmful effects of EMF radiation. So how does it work? Let?s take a closer look.

According to the company, its CeL-Factor device will not affect the performance of mobile phones or other devices. CeL-Factor does not shield or block the EMF radiation from the cell phone or other wireless devices. If it did, the wireless device would not function as designed,? the company said. CeL-Factor claims to work in the body of a wearer by communicating on a cellular level to keep cells organized when distortion occurs from EMF emitting devices such as cell phones and other wireless devices.

Although the World Health Organization considers the heavy usage of cell phones as carcinogenic, that will not exclude us from adding a grain of salt to the said CeL-Factor technology. Of course, one strong reason is that we haven?t really tried it. If you?ll head over to the Cel-Factor website, you?ll see the said devices with their corresponding price.
