Mother pleads not guilty after tot shoots self

A mother and her male friend pleaded not guilty Wednesday to manslaughter charges in the death of a 3-year-old boy who fatally shot himself with a gun left in their van when they stopped at a Tacoma, Wash., gas station, NBC station KING reported.
Eric Vita, 23, and Jahnisha McIntosh, 22, were negligent in allowing the woman?s son, Julio Segura-McIntosh, to reach the gun, Pierce County prosecutors said.
Vita is being held on $25,000 bail and cannot contact McIntosh, who is being held on $15,000 bail, KING reported.
Vita on March 14 placed his 9mm pistol under the passenger seat when he stepped out to pump gas, Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said. Vita has a concealed weapons permit but removed the gun from his low-fitting waistband to avoid alarming the store clerk, he said.
Julio unbuckled his seatbelt and walked to the front of the van to ask his mother for candy, Lindquist said. McIntosh moved the gun under the driver's seat?and went inside?to buy food as?Vita returned?to pump gas, he said.
Julio, unrestrained inside the van, found the gun and shot himself in the head, Lindquist said.
McIntosh's 8-month-old daughter was in the van in a rear-facing car seat at the time and was not hurt.
"Nothing is sadder than the death of a child, and when the death is the result of criminal negligence, there needs to be accountability," Lindquist said.
Friends and family told detectives that Vita routinely showed off the gun, including to Julio, and on one occasion he offered to let Julio hold the gun before another adult intervened, KING reported.
Vita's attorney, David Gehrke, told KOMO that his client acted reasonably.
"I think he was being very careful. He did not just leave the gun there, without another adult present. And I think if the mother had stayed in there, this probably would not have happened," Gehrke said.
Washington state is one of 23 that doesn't have a specific law to prevent child access to firearms, such as mandatory trigger locks or criminal penalties for adults who allow children to access guns, according to the San Francisco-based group Legal Community Against Violence.
However, the state does require a person with a concealed weapons permit to lock the gun and conceal it from view if it is left in the car.

A teen who prosecutors say was gang-raped, strangled and then set on fire has died, a hospital official said on Thursday. Oksana Makar's case sparked public protests in Ukraine.
Hundreds of people took to the streets earlier this month after police released two of 18-year-old?Makar's three suspected attackers. Their?parents reportedly had political connections and the?move?re-ignited a public debate on corruption in the ex-Soviet republic.
Makar's plight gained further attention when her mother, Tetyana Surovitska,?encouraged her to describe the?ordeal in a video clip uploaded to YouTube.
In the video?Makar calls for her attackers to be castrated and imprisoned, according to local English language newspaper Kyiv Post.?It named the suspects as Yevhen Krasnoschek, 23; Maksym Prisyazhnyuk, 24; and Artem Pogosyan, 22.
The three were arrested, but two -- whose parents had political connections -- were released without charge. They were re-arrested after the intervention of President Viktor Yanukovich who sent an investigating team to the town of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine.
'Her heart activity stopped'
Interior Minister Vitaly Zakharchenko confirmed earlier this month that the parents of at least one of the three suspects were former government officials in the Mykolaiv region.
"Lung bleeding began and then her heart activity stopped," said Emil Fistal, head of the specialist burns unit whre Makar was taken for treatment.?"We tried three times to revive her with defribillation."
According to local media reports, Makar met two of the three accused in a bar on March 10. After spending some time there with them, she?went to the apartment of the third.
The reports say she was then raped and one of the suspected attackers tried to strangle her with a cord. They subsequently wrapped her in a blanket, took her to a pit on a building site and tried to set her body on fire before escaping.
She was found by a passing motorist and taken to hospital with serious burns. She had both feet and an arm amputated in surgery, according to the reports.
The Kyiv Post also published what it said was leaked video of one of the three suspects? interrogation.
In that clip, the suspect, apparently Krasnoschek, said he was only trying to burn a pillowcase they had accidentally taken with them.
After disposing of Makar, the three suspects went to the supermarket to buy more vodka and, after that, stopped at a street kiosk for tea.
The BBC reported there have been several protests in Mykolaiv and elsewhere in Ukraine, including Odessa and Kharkiv, about the case and its handling by authorities.

Chinese officials take 70 Christians into custody
China (MNN) ? ChinaAid, a ministry partner of the Voice of the Martyrs, got word this week that a house church which has been meeting for nearly 20 years was raided by police. More than 70 Christians were taken into custody.
The church, in far west China's region of Xinjiang, China, was meeting at the pastor's home when officials stormed in. Ten policemen and Domestic Security Protection agents announced that the believers were holding an "unapproved, illegal meeting" and ordered an immediate end to it, reports ChinaAid.
The police confiscated the Christians' Bibles, hymnals, notebooks, Christian education DVDs, and other materials, but they refused to provide a receipt for the confiscated items as required by law.
Police then took the believers away. After forcing each Christian there to be photographed, authorities took them to the respective local police stations of their places of employment for questioning. Some were not released for two days.
The pastor and his wife were called into the local police station again the day after the raid for further questioning. They were threatened by the police, who ordered them to stop holding meetings in their home.

We?ve been written up in The LA Times, the Washington Post, Time Out New York, Time Out London, The Village Voice, The Sunday Age in Melbourne, NY Press, Gothamist, Fleshbot, The National Post (Canada), Nikkei Trendy (Japan) and scores of alt.weeklies. Talking heads have talked about us on air in the USA, France,Germany, Finland, Brazil, Scotland, Australia, and Canada. We were chosen as ?Best Wacky Life Drawing Session? by Shecky?s 2007 Best of New York, and have places in Time Out and Lonely Planet Guides.
In the meantime, artists across the world wanted in on our three hours of decadence. Starting in Norfolk, Virginia, but soon spreading from Hollywood to London to Melbourne, Dr. Sketchy?s began popping up across the globe. In June 2006, we signed with Sepulculture Books to do?Dr. Sketchy?s Official Rainy Day Colouring Book. Written by Molly Crabapple and John Leavitt, The Colouring Book is one part official Dr. Sketchy?s history and DIY compendium, one part activity book on acid. Filled with drinking games, paper dolls, dirty word finds, and almost a hundred illustrations, it?s available for sale now, with its first printing selling out fast.
In 2007, Molly toured the US, founding branches and spreading the Sketchy?s gospel. We brought Dr. Sketchy?s to Miss Exotic World, the San Diego Comic-Con, the New York Burlesque Festival, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. 30 dead, dozens missing in Bangladesh ferry crash
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? A ferry packed with about 200 people capsized in a river in southern Bangladesh on Tuesday, killing 30 people and leaving dozens more missing, authorities said.
Local police chief Mohammad Shahabuddin Khan said about 35 people were rescued after the ferry sank on the Meghna River after colliding with a cargo boat early in the morning. Divers have since recovered 30 bodies from inside the sunken ferry, he said.
He said the dead included a young woman found cradling her baby's lifeless body.
"The death toll is likely to rise as more bodies are feared trapped inside," Khan said. "We will get a better picture of the casualties once the sunken ferry is pulled out of the water."
Hundreds of anxious people, many of them weeping, gathered near the scene of the accident to look for their loved ones.
The MV Shariatpur-1 was traveling to the capital, Dhaka, from neighboring Shariatpur district to the southwest. The accident site is in Munshiganj district, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Dhaka.
Dulal Dewan, a survivor, described a scene of chaos as the ferry collided with the other ship.
"I was awakened with a big jolt," said the businessman, who was asleep on the top deck. "I jumped into the river in darkness as the ferry started going down."
"In minutes there were screams all around," he said. "People were shouting for help."
Dewan said he was rescued by a nearby boat, but eight other family members traveling with him were still unaccounted for.
Estimates varied as to how many people were on board the ferry.
Khan put the number at close to 200, while Dewan told reporters that about 300 people were on board when the double-deck ferry sank.
It is difficult to get a reliable estimate as ferry operators rarely keep a list of passengers. Most passengers buy tickets once on board.
Abdul Gani Akhand, 75, was among the survivors.
"I was sleeping and I really don't know how I survived," he said, shivering as a rescue worker ferried him to a hospital.
Azizul Alam, the area's government administrator, said an investigation has been ordered into the cause of the accident.
Alam said rescuers located the ferry in water about 70 feet (21 meters) deep. He said a rescue vessel was trying to pull the sunken boat close to the shore.
Ferry accidents, often blamed on overcrowding, faulty vessels and lax rules, are common in Bangladesh, a low lying delta nation of 160 million people.

Circumcision may help protect against prostate cancer
Infections are known to cause cancer, and research suggests that sexually transmitted infections may contribute to the development of prostate cancer. Also, certain sexually transmitted infections can be prevented by circumcision. Therefore, it stands to reason that circumcision should protect against the development of some cases of prostate cancer. This is what lead author Jonathan L. Wright, MD, an affiliate investigator in the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division, and his colleagues set out to test.
For their study, the investigators analyzed information from 3,399 men (1,754 with prostate cancer and 1,645 without). Men who had been circumcised before their first sexual intercourse were 15 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer than uncircumcised men. This reduced risk applied for both less aggressive and more aggressive cancers. (Specifically, men circumcised before their first sexual intercourse had a 12 percent reduced risk for developing less aggressive prostate cancer and an 18 percent reduced risk for developing more aggressive prostate cancer.)
Sexually transmitted infections may lead to prostate cancer by causing chronic inflammation that creates a hospitable environment for cancer cells. Other mechanisms may also be involved. Circumcision may protect against sexually transmitted infections, and therefore prostate cancer, by toughening the inner foreskin and by getting rid of the moist space under the foreskin that may help pathogens survive.
"These data are in line with an infectious/inflammatory pathway which may be involved in the risk of prostate cancer in some men," said Dr. Wright, who is also an assistant professor of urology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. "Although observational only, these data suggest a biologically plausible mechanism through which circumcision may decrease the risk of prostate cancer. Future research of this relationship is warranted," he added.

STUDY: California Couples Improved by Marriage Education ...
Data released by Healthy Relationships California (HRC) from the largest study ever conducted on the impact of Marriage Education classes showed that these programs help couples significantly improve their communication and levels of relationship satisfaction.
Surveying 17,245 Californians who took one of several programs available for couples, HRC found a statewide average increase of more than 13% in relationship satisfaction immediately after taking a Marriage Education course, and that this improvement increased to 16% after 30 days, and stayed at 14% when measured six months later.
Even more astounding, participants reported a 23% improvement in their communication, increasing to 27% after 30 days and remaining at that level 6 months later.
These results are considered both significant and important for three reasons:
- They include couples with severe marital problems who are relatively ?resistant? to change, as well as happy couples who have relatively little room for improvement;
- The results reflect a widely diverse group of participants?from all ages and socioeconomic levels, and with more than 50% taking the class in a language other than English;
- The study measures the impact of more than a dozen different Marriage Education curricula that range in length from 8 hours to 24 hours.

This positive impact on communication skills and relationship satisfaction often goes beyond the marital relationship. ?Not surprisingly, we hear from participants that what they learn in these classes helps not only their intimate relationships, but these skills are valuable for their family and workplace relationships too,? says Stoica.
Healthy Relationships California is the recipient of one of the Federal government?s largest Community-Centered Healthy Marriage and Relationship Grants. For the past six years, HRC has taught proven relationship-building skills to more than 120,000 Californians in classes and workshops offered through local partner organizations throughout the state.
